New Association to Advance the Responsible Use of Energy Peat
July 14, 2016
Developing the Energy Union is at the core of Energy Peat Europe’s agenda.
Shortly after its founding, the association has succeeded in bringing together members from six different countries.
A new association working in the field of energy policy has launched its operations in Brussels. The association, Energy Peat Europe (EPE), focuses on advancing the use of energy peat in a sustainable and responsible manner.
According to the organization, the members wish to highlight peat’s importance as an indigenous and local energy source, which can provide jobs as well as security of supply for many European countries. In their work, EPE’s members are committed to the highest environmental practices and especially to the protection of environmentally valuable peatlands. In this regard, peat for energy should only come from drained peatlands.
Shortly after its founding, the association has gathered members from several EU countries, including Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ireland. Members include peat production companies, energy companies as well as national peat associations.
EPE wishes to participate in the development of the EU’s Energy Union. Peat can play a very positive part in this process: it contributes to energy diversity, security of supply and rural development. It also has major synergies with the EU’s goals in bioenergy and heating and cooling.
